For All International Students

Before & After Arrival

Before Your Arrival

Before embarking on the journey to Accra, students should check with our administration to see if they require a visa to travel and study in Ghana.

You must have a valid international vaccination card in any scenario. You can get to Accra via road or plane. If you are traveling to Ghana for the first time by road, we recommend using a reputable transportation company such as STC, ABC, CROSS COUNTRY, UTB, STIF, or IMPERIAL. If you ask us before you arrive, we may also provide you with information on public transportation.

ID card for non-citizens

Before receiving a Residence Permit, all foreign nationals must provide their non-citizenID card to the Ghana Immigration Service. All new Residence Permit applications and renewals must include a copy of the Non-citizen IDCard.

Pick-up from the airport/coach station

Impact Guidance College may arrange for a driver to meet you at the airport or bus station and transport you to your hotel/or hostel. Please notify us of your itinerary, arrival date, and time at least seven working days prior to your arrival.

What is the purpose of the Non-citizen IDcard?

For foreign nationals living in Ghana, the Non-citizen Ghanacard is the national identity card. Foreign nationals who have spent 90 days or more in Ghana are required by law to register for a Non-citizen Ghana card. The Card, which costs $120.00, must be used for all transactions requiring identification. The Ghana Immigration Service will not provide services to foreign nationals living in Ghana who do not have a Non-citizen Ghanacard.

To study in Ghana, a prospective student must first get an offer of admission from a Ghanaian institution that is recognized and accredited. To study in Ghana, a prospective student must first get an offer of admission from a Ghanaian institution that is recognized and accredited. Students from countries outside of the ECOWAS region must obtain visas or entry permits before visiting Ghana. Before a residence permit can be issued, the following extra requirements must be met, regardless of nationality:

  • Should provide a valid travel document, such as a passport or an ECOWAS Travel Document, as well as proof of admission from an accredited university.
  • To receive a course offer from an accredited university.
  • Prove that you’ve paid the requisite course fees.
  • The required fees for a residency permit must be paid.
  • Should submit an application form as well as two (2) passport-size photos.

Money and Day-to-Day Living Expenses

The Ghanaian Cedi is the country’s currency (GHS).With an international ATM card, you can exchange money at bureaux de change or withdraw money from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) (VISA or MasterCard).

We advise you not to bring a big quantity of cash with you because pickpockets may be found anywhere, and Accra is no different. If you’re traveling by car, we recommend not changing too much money at the border because the Ghanaian Cedi is a new currency for you. For your journey, you may just need to change a small amount (maybe 10.000 FCFA).

In addition to tuition expenses, we recommend that students have a monthly budget of at least US$ 220.00 to study in Accra.

Health

If you require hospital care, go to the nearest hospital or healthcare facility. If you need to see a professional, you can seek advice or assistance from our administration.

Students who plan to study in Ghana for longer than three months should sign up for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The National Health Insurance System (NHIS) covers about 95% of disease issues that affect us. Currently, the annual membership price is less than US$ 15.00.

Personal Protection

  • Keep your valuables hidden from view (your bag, camera or mobile phone for example). This is especially critical if you’re in a busy environment, as on a bus. Pickpockets abound in Accra, so be cautious!
  • If your pocketbook or wallet is stolen, don’t forget to cancel your credit or ATM cards right away.
  • When crossing the street, be extra cautious. Always remember to look BOTH WAYS because traffic may be arriving from a different direction than usual.
  • Never go out late at night on your own!
  • If you believe you are being followed, cross the street, change your path, or slow down.

Receiving money and opening a bank account

To open a bank account, you’ll need to have a school letter from Reception verifying that you’re an enrolled student. You’ll also need to bring your passport to the bank, and some banks may require a utility statement, such as an electricity bill, to verify your address. A copy of your residence permit may also be required.

Having an account comes in handy when students need to send money back to their home country. For foreigners, an international passport is the only acceptable form of identification when receiving money through money transfer firms (Western Union, MoneyGram, etc.). International ATM cards, on the other hand, can be used to withdraw money from a number of ATMs around Ghana.
